The picture is taken few days after he was released from prison where he spent 6 years for killing one of his fellow drinkers. Pine Ridge is a dry reservation but one of the biggest problems there is alcoholism and many crimes are committed as a result of alcohol. Carl, who suffered years from severe PTSD lives in a trailer next to the famous Wounded Knee cemetery with his wife, 11 children and two grandchildren. The monthly income of the family is $600 from the government. To survive the family makes handmade bead work and dream catchers which they sell to the few tourists who visit the historical site.
