Brotherhood of American Indians reads the tattoo on the back of Carl Sun Bear, veteran from Vietnam from the village of Wounded Knee, South Dakota. The picture is taken few days after he was released from prison where he spent 6 years for killing one of his fellow drinkers. Pine Ridge is a dry reservation but one of the biggest problems there is alcoholism and many crimes are committed as a result of alcohol. Carl lives in a trailer next to the famous Wounded Knee cemetery with his wife, 11 children and two grandchildren. The monthly income of the family is $600 from the government. To survive the family makes handmade bead work and dream catchers which they sell to the few tourists who visit the historical site.
